Read the history →The textile industry, mechanical engineering and industrial production fundamentally transformed Chemnitz in the 19th century. Former factory sites, industrialists’ villas and industrial architecture still shape the cityscape today.
After the Second World War, the heavily damaged city centre was redesigned. In 1953 Chemnitz was renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt; in 1990 the city returned to the name Chemnitz. Buildings, squares and the Karl Marx Monument still make this era visible today.
