The textile industry, mechanical engineering and industrial production fundamentally transformed Chemnitz in the 19th century. Former factory sites, industrialists’ villas and industrial architecture still shape the cityscape today.
A city with several visible layers of history.
After the Second World War, the heavily damaged city centre was redesigned. In 1953 Chemnitz was renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt; in 1990 the city returned to the name Chemnitz. Buildings, squares and the Karl Marx Monument still make this era visible today.
